About the Spaces of Performance Conference
The Drama Australia National Conference is hosted by each state or territory in turn and DramaWest is proud and excited to be staging the Spaces of Performance conference in 2011. The DramaWest committee is pulling out all stops to make this conference a memorable success for our local, interstate and international colleagues. We are especially delighted to be working in the brand new State Theatre Centre of Western Australia, part of the Perth Cultural Centre. Indeed the whole of the cultural precinct is being updated just for our conference or so it seems. There is even an orchard, a wetlands and new gardens.
Two weeks before Easter and the beginning of autumn, it is a perfect time to be in Perth.
Spaces of Performance kicks off with an opening cocktail party in the foyer of the Heath Ledger Theatre on Thursday March 31st. The conference opening features our key note speaker, Patrice Baldwin, the recently elected president of IDEA. This is followed by presentations of practical workshops and research papers, industry booths, great networking opportunities, wonderful performances and a chance to explore some very different spaces. Two special highlights will be a playwrights’ panel and the sharing of the Spaces of Performance schools project.
Conference Theme
Spaces of Performance is the conference theme reflecting the multiple spaces of Drama. Our conference logo came from a photograph involving drama students in ‘Crucible’ costumes playing with 30 metres of red fabric in a strong sea breeze on the top of sand dunes at Lancelin north of Perth; the sand and blue sky being iconic symbols of Western Australia.
